My Fight with tanning! (using home remedies)

I love sunny days and prefer summers over winters. Somehow I can go out happily at 40 degree's, but no force on earth can get me out of a blanket in winters. Infact my main reasons for not continuing a regular job is because I don't work in winters.

Tanning however, is the worst part of summers! and its the one thing that's been haunting me.

Left to Right :
Haldi day wedding celebrations(Nov. 2012), Shimla right after the wedding(Nov. 2012), South Africa first day(Dec. 2012), South Africa last day (Dec. 2012) , Goa first day(March 2013), Goa last Day(March 2013)
The only thing I am super glad about is that last year I was pretty much the same 'color' so my wedding went off with no drama, but post-marriage its like my skin is playing holi!

South Africa is a wonderful country no doubt and if your planning to visit then do apply sunscreen every hour! ( I am not sure how much truth there is in this fact but someone at a shop in South Africa told us that sunscreen brought from Indian are not effective against the harsh South African sun and its better to just pick up a sunscreen from a local shop there..)

Anyways, here's what I did to remove tanning :

1. Uptan :

This is probably the most used and super effective way of removing tan. This time around however I did feel the tan lighten and almost go away (see Goa first day picture Vs South Africa last day pic) but.....aahhh....

its difficult to explain...ok let me try, I have a golden undertone skin but after coming back from South Africa it was like the skin changed its undertone color and I got tanned from within where as Indian tanning is just the top layer.

So Uptan helped me remove the outer tanning but the inner tanning remained, which can't be really seen in some pictures but in others its like an alien color.....(does that make sense at all?!?)

As for you lovelies, Uptan is really good!

How to make :

Mix together :
1. Besan 1-2 spoons
2. Haldi half teaspoon
3. Lemon half
4. Honey a little
5. Milk to mix
6. Choker 1spoon
7. a little Rose water ( if you have any)

Basically Besan, Haldi and Milk are the most important components the rest if you have them, then add them otherwise those 3 do the job well.

The mixture should look semi-solid.

What to do with it?

Apply it all over your face, neck, hands, legs where ever you want.

Let it dry (til it gets a little hard)

Then you can either wash it off or scrub it off. I personally prefer scrubbing it off.

People generally advice to not use soap after this!

2. Tomato's

Again great for removing tan, but I think it works better if its a recent tan, as in you do this end of the day and the same days tan would go away easily. Using it twice a week, once middle of the week and once on the weekend makes it more effective.

How to make :

Cut a medium size tomato into 2 parts

What to do with it?

Apply it to your face and/or your hands, squeeze it a little to get the juice out directly on your skin

If you find this a little messy you can extract the juice first and then apply it on.

Leave it for 15 min. There might be a slight tingly sensation but that's just the tomato juice working its magic.

Wash it off.

3. Malai Saffron

I am in love with this solution! This is the only homemade tan removal pack that has removed the weird alien skin color (mentioned above). Also the only one which lightened the sleeve tan (tanning on the shoulders which is left  behind because...of the sleeves..(huh?!)..blogging is getting tougher with just words)

How to make :

Take out Malai from the milk

Soak 3-4 strands of Saffron in malai overnight

What to do with it?

Apply it all over your face and hands (avoid on the face if you already have oily skin)

Let it dry for 15 min.

Wash it off by gently rubbing.

I don't use soap when I use this.

Stink Alert! make sure the bathroom is cleaned afterwards, it leaves behind a nasty stink but the skin is super soft and 'chikni'

Well now I am pretty much back to my normal skin tone, my golden undertone is back because of the malai-saffron tan-pack and I am now finally able to look at mirrors again! (does that sound vain?!)

Anyways with summer heat about to leave and wedding season approaching, don't forget to protect your skin! It took me around 4-5 months to get my skin back! Take Care!

5 Easy Tips By a MUA for the Bride to be!

Bangalore based Rekha Krishnamurthy from 'Studio Mirror Loves Youadvises Brides-to-be....

 1. Drink lots of fluids
Drinking fluids, especially, Water is more of a common sense than a tip. This is one rule each one of us should follow throughout our lives. Water helps flush out toxins and the effects can certainly be seen on one’s skin. There is an unmistakable glow on your face, constantly, when you make drinking atleast 8 glasses of water a practice. Along with water, one can also consume juices of clear fruits and vegetables like Watermelon, Cucumber etc

2. Watch what you eat
Wedding is a once in a lifetime celebration, and one cannot help but get carried away with lot of mouth watering savories around. But, a little bit of discipline would definitely go a long way. So, ensure that you stop consuming Sweets & Deep Fried foods atleast 15 Days before your wedding. The last thing you want is a pimple to pop on your Big Day. Also, if you are a Non – Vegetarian, restrict yourself to grilled delicacies only. (toughest thing to do of all 5! )

Makeup Artist! What? How? What is this?

Those of you who have been reading the blog would know I picked the first Makeup Artist I liked and I really don't regret it. I actually do recommend her to a lot of people, love the way she gives complete personal attention, helped me research styles and agreed to travel any where in Delhi/NCR (she travels to Chandigarh also sometimes)

The best part of the makeup was I got it done around 6pm on the wedding day and it stayed exactly the same till  6am  when I finally got around taking it off. The lipstick faded a tiny bit just before Phera's so that's around 2am but then I did eat a LOT.

I did however, miss out on the journey of finding a perfect MUA.

Please see the following articles from fellow bloggers to get yourself updated on MUA's! Its the one topic I cant help a lot on.

Product Review: Everyuth Golden Glow peel off mask

Its been quite a while since I have written any product review, I guess I have gotten pretty lazy after marriage and havn't really been taking care of myself. After Esha's article on the blog about being Not just a perfect Mrs. but a perfect YOU , it got be back on my skincare regime.

On a visit back home I was quite surprised with my sisters skin, it was glowing! the way skins do in movies!

Her secret : she had been using 'Everyuth Golden Glow peel off mask' every week for just a month!

A MUST for all Brides-to-be!!

I used it after her advice and it showed results in the first use!!
 Its my pre-party basic now!
(PS : Works on Boy's skins too..... *looks sheepish* )

How to Use
Wash face, pat skin dry. Apply evenly over your face avoiding eyes and mouth ( do not apply a very thin layer ). Let it dry for 15 - 20 minutes. Peel off from forehead in a downward direction towards chin and wash off. For best results, use atleast once a week.

Price
Rs. 60 -80 (not sure, but that range)

CIB Warning : Do not apply a thin layer! it hurts too much to remove, apply a nice thick layer.

New Bahu's Makeup Box Essentials!!

When I went Makeup Trousseau shopping how naive I was. Although I got all essentials to get me started they were still a young girls list of things. As soon as I was asked to get dressed for the first outing post marriage I realized all those pretty pinks and nude lipsticks worked no where.

If you are like me, and prefer your skin the way it is don't be mistaken into thinking you will not be using a lot of makeup. However cool your in-laws are and they won't say it but they would still love for you to dress up and look like the 'nayi-dulhan' at least the initial few months.

So here is a LIST of New Bahu's Makeup MUST-HAVE!
Brides-to-be make sure you have these!!

1. FOUNDATION

Well I got this one correct during trousseau shopping!
Get one of day and one for night.

Day : Get a BB creme , they have enough coverage so your skin looks great and is not so heavy and you don't feel as if you have disappeared under layers.

Which one...ANY, most BB cremes are pretty good. I personally use Garnier these days.

For more details you can read a comparison of Garnier, Maybelline and Deborah BB creams at Peach&Blush here

Night : MAC, Love it! Best out of all. If its out of your budget I would strongly recommend Loreal as well. Not the powder one the creams. I don't like powder foundation some how you can't get an even coverage.

2. CONCEALER
I don't use concealer so I am probably not the best person to advice on it. But for Quick fixes, dark circles, unexpected pimples I use Maybelline BB stick.

Can be used as a bb day foundation as well.

3. BLUSH
I used to own one blush. Pink in color and that's it. I thought it would get me through. Well thankfully the persuasive MAC girl got me to buy a reddish one too!

Blush Basic : You need a minimum of 3!

Pink
Red
Peach

Not sure if Peach works for you, it does! I have quite recently discovered peach as a color for blushes, I did know about it earlier ofcourse but never considered using it.

After travelling almost every fortnight since the wedding I am tanned badly! So bad that I hate looking at the mirror (says the girl who was so self obsessed that I have mirrors in my room every where).

Errr..how does that connect to peach blushes?! What I discovered was if your looking for a slight blush, like you get post exerciser, the darker your skin tone the better peach blushes looks on you and if you more towards pale then pink does the same effect and peach becomes a color blush.

Colorbar Coral Craving

4. EYE SHADOW

You would probably get a LOT of colors gifted to you by your in-laws in the makeup kit. So for this one alone its better to stick to the basics. Ofcourse do get a nice color pallet on your own, you can never have enough! I have 3 color pallets of around 12 colors each and yet I am at times lost. So the more the better.

L'oreal chrome Shine Beigh Simmer is my quick fix basic
This is the exact effect that you get.

To Person in the picture, Took it off google , if you have an issue let me know. Also tell me which camera you have.

I also like Revlon 'Romantic Girl' Love the finish you get on the eye.

5. EYE LINER, MASCARA and KAJAL

Eye Liner : L'oreal Super Liner is super black! That is why I love it. If your not comfortable with liquid liners try this one! Its the only one which I can wear without my eyeliner going crazy all over the place.
Mascara :

I will not even explain why, just go and buy it
Recently discovered the goodness of this one. Gives you a nice curly effect and no clumping!. Is waterproof. Maybelline says it gives you an effect as if your wearing false eye lashes, I don't really think so.Best way is to use the yellow one first and then this one, so ya two mascara's but great effect!

Kajal :

Incolor

Although I have lost mine since a couple of months and havn't brought a new one, been using maybelline colossal kajal. That's good to , a little bit of spills but great otherwise. Would still consider Incolor better but Maybelline is a good substitute too.

6. LIPSTICKS

I got so many pretty pinks and lovely peaches which have been used only twice. Red lipsticks girls RED that is what a married women needs!

Doesn't mean you go all aunty brownish-maroon. Here are two great New-Bride colors that will work

NYX Absolute Red
Love it! a very modern red! plus it stays on for a long time
Loreal Infallible Le Rouge Lipstick
829 Resilient Resin
This is a bit aunty-maroon-brown-turned-elegant-modern

7. NAILPAINTS

Pre-marriage I had all sorts of colorbar bright Orange, wacky greens, Loud Fushia's and now they lie in my closet gathering dust.

I don't change my nailpaints a lot so I try using the ones that go with everything. My current fav. Bridalish paints are :

loreal red tote

Loreal 403

Loreal 580
Loreal 350 is similar too, a little more bronzy

I just realized that I like all Loreal colors....hmm....must buy other brands....

8. SINDOOR

I have Lotus and Lakme, but both of them are maroon and I don't like the maroon ones, they get blackish in a while. So I got a nice tomato red!

Sun and the Bride

While our counter parts on the other side of the world spend hours in the sun trying to get the perfect 'Bronze' look for their wedding, we stay indoors trying to avoid it at all cost!

What should a Bride do??

1. Use sunscreen Every single day, even if your on a self imposed curfew.
Because something or the other WILL happen and you'll have to step out of the house for a few minutes and that is enough for Mr. Sun to start the damage.

2. Carry Sunscreen at ALL times!
Sunscreen looses it effects after 2 hours, I recently learnt this by an Article on Makeup Beauty Lounge . So re-appyling is a MUST! Also it must be 30-50spf.

3. Keep Sunscreen Every where.
Last year when I was in my pre-bridal stage I had sunscreen kept in the car, at my dressing table, at my mom's dressing table and one in my purse. So even if I forgot to put it, it was easily accessible to me.

4. Umbrella, dupatta, sun glasses.
Carry everything and anything that can be used to cover you up!

So What happens when the sun does get to you...

Try Home made De-tanning packs. See How to make them at http://www.crazyindianwedding.com/2012/09/home-remedies-taking-care-of-your-skin.html

Of Chocolate Wax, Malai and Dentist..

Chocolate Wax :

Waxing has always been my arch enemy. My mom thankfully enrolled me for a laser treatment the minute I was eligible.

Even after laser getting chocolate wax is advisable since laser can not remove tiny light color hairs and wax helps with that as well as removes suntan! Plus the advantage of chocolate wax over normal one is it makes your skin baby soft!

Malai :

Ah! the advantage of Indian home remedies. How blessed are we when our mom knows exactly what to do to make our skin softer with things in her kitchen.

You all know all about uptan right!? I did a post on it a few months back in case you forgot check here .
Well just add malai of Full cream milk in it. You will fall in love with your skin!

Dentist :

Even though we take care of our teeth the best way possible a little help doesn't hurt. Visit a dentist atleast a week before the functions for a clean up!

Warning : My dentist has advised me against bleaching as it can cause 'challa' in the mouth. So consult a good dentist incase you need bleaching badly otherwise please avoid!

Readers Question : Skincare

Hey,

I was trying to search for almost everything related to Pre Bridals and stumbled upon your blog.

My wedding is in first week of Feb, but ever since the date has been decided my skin has started to behave weirdly O.o

There are very tiny pimples (something like those) on my face although I've never ever had acne or pimple problems :(

Moreover, when should I start taking pre bridal treatments from? My skin tone is husky but I wanna improve my complexion and skin quality. What should I do?

Please Help me.

For Pre-bridal I recommend that you ask who ever is doing your bridal makeup. Because they have to handle your skin on the D day so they will be the best person to guide you.

Incase you havn't decided that yet then try to go to salons that you have been going from before and are satisfied with their work.

If you don't have a fixed salon then don't take risk, go to reputed ones like Looks in Noida or Lakme in M block GK or Affinity, any salon with a good reputation.

I started my pre-bridal 4 months before the wedding. But it all depends on your skin and your budget. But since your breaking out it good to have atleast a clean up or a facial once a month if not the whole package.

I know of girls who just take there regular clean ups every month, a regular mani-pedi and then just take a single sitting of the whole pre-bridal package and still have the bridal 'glow'.

If your hair is dry or damaged then you might need a hair spa treatment otherwise just take a facial/cleanup for your face and decide the rest upon your budget.

Also try home remedies such as : Uptan or a cucumber face pack,,, I did a whole post on this you can read here : http://www.crazyindianwedding.com/2012/09/home-remedies-taking-care-of-your-skin.html
Also read the comments..other readers have given further advice on it!

and my normal skin care regime is given here, I actually used a number of products and the post contains only those that helped me, I don't take a lot of risk since my skin is very sensitive : http://www.crazyindianwedding.com/2012/09/pre-wedding-skin-care-routine.html

Also Malai helps, just put it on for 15 min and wash it of, skin becomes super soft and 'chikni'. I strongly recommend Garnier Body Cocoon for softer skin or Johnson and Johnson's baby Oil.

Make sure that you use creams and Oils during winters!
Dink a lot of water and keep your self healthy! T

he way to a good skin is to have a healthy well cared skin, whatever the color maybe. Try out home remedies since they are safer and less prone to having a negative reaction.

Also don't worry!

Girls any other advice?!?

Home Remedies : Taking Care of your Skin : Pre-Bridal

I guess this is my 3rd post on skin care, I might have became a bit obsessed with skin care
(stop nodding your head)

Here are some Home Remedies I use :

1. UPTAN

Most of us probably know this one, Indian mom's love to rub their kids raw with this Home made scrub from the moment they are born.
For those who have no idea what I am talking about, darling if your having an Indian Wedding this will take place on the morning of your wedding!

Removes Tanning, dirt, dust and gives a great glow.

For any problems with this one, ask your mom she will most defiantly know.

2. TOMATO

Quickest way to remove tanning.

How to make :

Cut a medium size tomato into 2 parts

What to do with it?

Apply it directly to your face and/or your hands, the inner side on your skin, squeese it a little to get the juice out.

If you find this a little messy you can extract the juice first and then apply it on.

Leave it for 15 min. There might be a slight tingly sensation but thats just the tomato juice working its magic.

Wash it off. Your done!

3. CUCUMBER

My college roommate told me about this one. She has amazing skin and for it she used to put this mask on every week. (Sometimes 2-3 times a week!).

Clears your skins and gives it a great 'glow'. A definite must, specially for the summer months.

How to make and What to do with it?

Can be done in 2 ways :

1. cut slices like the picture above
or
2. Grate the cucumber and then put it on (this is the way my friend prefers it)

Put it on for 15 min and wash!

4. MALAI

Most houses have non-fat milk these days but even after that after boiling you still get some amount of malai, save it up!

Wont recommend it for the face, specially if you have oily skin. But great for arms and legs, leaves the skin feeling softer.

What to do with it?

Put it on for 15 min and wash it off.

5. HONEY

dont really put it on like this! its a mask not a body wash!
Is a great way to moisturize and soften your skin, added advantage it makes a great lip gloss and a lip scrub!!

i) Face Mask

 How to make it?

Buy some Honey :P
I use the normal Dabur honey, they have this easy pour bottle which I like

What to do with it?

Put on Honey evenly all over your face, leave it for 15 min and wash off.

ii) Lip Scrub

How to make it?

Mix honey with small amount of sugar

What to do with it?

Scrub gently on lips using your fingers, use very slight pressure and circular motion. Keep scrub for a couple of minutes, wash it off.

To use it as a LIP GLOSS just apply it as you would apply a normal gloss. Doesn't last very long but gives a nice shine if needed in an emergency, plus tastes great and acts as a great moisturizer.

6. SUGAR AND LIME

Great Scrub.

How to make it?

Cut a lemon in half.
Put a few spoons of sugar in a cup

What to do with it?

Dip the lemon half in the sugar cup so that the sugar sticks onto the lemon, gently scrub it on your face and arms, keep squeezing the lemon a bit so that when you scrub you get both the sugar and lemon juice onto your skin

I don't really recommend a lot of scrubbing with this on the face, it can be a bit rough, but a lot of people do it, so its your personal choice.

Wash it off when tired of scrubbing

7. PAPAYA

A LOT of people recommend this. Both eating it and applying it for great skin. I tried it once didnt quite like it.

How to make it?

Cut a papaya into small pieces, remove the seeds. Mash it a little.

What to do with it?

Apply it on your face , leave for 15 min. Wash it off

8. ICE PACK

Best for avoiding Skin Burn, dark circles and puff eyes

Havn't used it much personally, but have heard great reviews from everyone. Also is a great way to close pores, so if you need your skin to look clearer immediately just rub ice all over it

How to make it?

You get good ice gel packs these days. Available every where. or else just wrap some ice in a Hanky :P (handkerchief).

People recommend freezing rose water for this too.

What to do with it?

Just put it on your face and arms immediately after you return from outside. Use it in the mornings to reduce puffy eyes and dark circles.

Any Other Recommendations guys?

Readers Question on makeup and Saree Draping Course

bridetobe asks I wanted to do a basic make up and saree draping course before my wedding... any idea where i can do something like this in delhi... dont wanna spend a bomb

aah,....difficult question... I tried to find one too but couldn't....

For makeup what you can do is that a lot of makeup counters at  stores like shoppers stop, pantaloons, lifestyle, etc. offer free 'makeover' services you can ask them for one.

Show interest in their products and they themselves will tell your more about what works with your skin.
Contantly ask them questions and observe what they are doing on your face. Tell them your getting married and are looking for makeup to take you from day outings to night functions.

I went to mac to get my stuff, they have a makeup deal in a way that if you want a makeup 'trial' then you have to get products worth 4000 something but if the sales girls are free sometimes they just help you out without much fuss.

The best way is to tell them that your looking for a foundation coz that way they have to try it on your skin anyways and just ask questions about any makeup issues that you have, if you don't know anything tell them that they will help you out. The MAC girl that I talked to was really friendly and ended up teaching me quite a lot.

Watch videos on Youtubes, many good ones are available.

and try! you must try! experiment a bit in your pre-wedding time. I am a no-makeup girl too, but now since I need to learn what works on me and what doesn't I make sure I put on make up at every available opportunity.

As for Saree Drapping there are you tube video for it as well but learning from your mom or aunts is the best way out.

Any Other suggestions girls???

Pre-Bridal : A necessity or Vanity

Just had my fist pre-bridal a few days back, still not sure if its worth it or not...

What is a Pre-Bridal?

Its basically a full skin care regime that you take before your wedding. It could just be a one day spa or a full 4 months routine.

What does it comprise of?

This more over depends on your skin and hair type. Most good Salons or MUA's will make a package that suits you and your budget.

Basics that it should have,

If its a one day routine that your doing just a few days before the wedding :

1. Manicure
2. Pedicure
3. Facial (the one that will give you a happy bridal glow)
4. Waxing
5. Threading
6. Hair Spa
7. Body Polish
8. Body massage
9. If you can then the pre-bridal baths that used to happen in ancient Indian times with rose petals and everything.
10. and anything else that will calm the jittering nerves.

Apart from this if your going for a full 2 or 3 or 4 months pre-bridals

Then every month you should have :

1. Manicure
2. Pedicure
3. Facial/Clean up (depending on your skin)
4. Waxing
5. Hair Care

If things are over exceeding your budget then make sure you get atleast one pre-bridal before the wedding and just take good care of your skin by simple home remedies (post coming soon on this).

After all its your big day..you should feel like a princess.

Where to get it done from?

Almost all salons offer a good deal when it comes to pre-bridal.

My suggestion consult your Makeup Artist (MUA) on this, she is the one who will be handling your skin on the D-day. Its her job to make it look fabulous and flawless. Its always better to ask the painter how he wants the canvas.

What am I doing?

I have roped my MUA in for this. She can't complain on the last day about my skin coz she is the one taking care of it ;P

I have the whole 4 month package, mainly because I had the time plus mani-pedi I usually used to get it done every month before as well and my hair is dry and a little frizzy-rough so I needed that extra care.

Not Sure if I really need a facial or a clean up but I am getting it done anyways. People anyway always recommend to have one in a month on a regular basis.

Wedding means a lot of meeting with in-laws months before the D-day for shopping or family dinners and its better to look pretty with well cared nails, skin and hair.

So what are you going to do??

Pre-Wedding Skin Care Routine

My skin has been improving since last year and I am not exactly sure which specific product should be given credit for it, maybe the combination of all...

Best product to avoid pimples and get rid of blackheads. There is a concentrated formula that comes DONT buy that, the scrub is way better.

Helps remove all the dust and pollution that builds up on the skin. Instantly makes the skin looks cleaner.

I am totally against fairness creams and believe that every girl looks great in their own skin.

Unfortunately
I didn't realize this was a 'Fairness' product till it was to late. I don't wish to say it but its true my skin has started looking 'fairer' since I have been using this as a mask.

Won't recommend any product because of its properties to make you look 'fairer' but yes will
recommend it ONLY because it gives your skin a nice glow effect.

MY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS :

Tried, tested and in love with them!

Ponds Golden Radiance
Best Skin Care ever!

I have the Facewash, Serum, Day Cream, Night Cream.
Dont have the  eye cream

Facewash : Not sure if you really need it but since its part of the  series I use it anyways, I am sure it helps but I use it after my Garnier scrub

Serum : Havn't used this much coz I never understood really the need of a Serum, just started using it after a SA told me its good for under eye and around the mouth area, where ever there is a slight discoloration.

Day Cream : Been using this the longest, on a regular basis! If you don't want the whole set just get this. Makes your skin looks amazing, if your the no-makeup-take-me-as-I-am girl then this is the best product for you, just put this on and your done.

Night Cream : I have just started using it on a regular basis ever since my MUA scolded me for not doing a proper night care regime. Does it help...YES, in the morning the skin looks great.
Tiny secret tip on this one : it has more golden particles then the day cream, so on my engagement day I used this on my arms. In the video and pictures you can see tiny glittering things on the arm.

Garnier Body Cocoon

Been using this since the last 4-5 years. HIGHLY recommended it specially if you have rough skin.
Best Body skin Care product. Just got another one of my friends to buy it, she is loving it. Need to get a couple of more people I know to use this.

Secret Tip : Use it all over at Night, skin is baby soft the next day.

Hope this helps!
