How to save Money while Trousseau shopping?

Getting a complete new wardrobe is a dream for every girl and that's what happens when an Indian girl gets married!
Not only is it a dream come true, your parents don't say 'No' to anything (well...almost anything...within reasons)

So does this topic even belong here, well we should save money where ever we can, right?! ( so we can spend it while shopping on our honeymoon ;P )

So where should you save and where should you splurge?

Main Outfits

1. Wedding Outfit : Splurge!
2. Tilak/Engagement/Reception Outfit : Splurge!
3. Sangeet and Mehendi Outfit : This is the most 'fun' functions of all and your outfit should be equally comfy to accommodate all kinds of dancing (bhangra to salsa), so skip the bling and heavy embroidery,2 have fun and Save!
4. Haldi/Pooja Outfit : Haldi, Save! its going to get dirty anyways. For Pooja pick an Anarkali or Saree out of your other Trousseau outfits and Save!

Trousseau ( Saree, Suits, Western, others)

1. Trousseau 11 Saree's : Most family (read : mom's) would insist on minimum 11 Saree's in your Trousseau. If your not a Saree girl and if you don't have a lot of weddings coming within the family then make sure you don't take more than 5 heavy saree ie Splurge on 5 Saree's, why even 5? Because this would be the only time no one is looking at price tags and eventually one day you will need something that looks like a 'newly wed'.

How do you save on even these 5???
Buy Red or maroons! Nothing says Newly-Wed like a Red Saree so even if its not a heavily embroidered saree it will still give that effect.
Buy Tie-Dye ( Bandani Saree) Even the ones with a light border give a nice effect and can easily look well dressed.

Buy 4 good South Silks : These come in variety of price range and whether its expensive or not they all look equally elegant! Can easily be dressed up or dress down. So from a wedding to a dinner party a single south silk can take you places. Splurge or Save as your budget allows. ( CIB highly recommends Nalli, they have beautiful Silk Saree's in all price range)

'In-fashion' 2 Saree , Only 2?! well you should ideally buy atleast 4 but if we are covering only 11 saree's then this is what I m left with. Here SAVE! fashion changes in a blink of eye. Infact last year before I could make up my mind if I wanted a velvet palla half and half saree they went out of fashion. Plus these are the ones that you can easily buy at any point of time after the wedding. These are the ones that people will be gifting you. So buy the ones you know you'll wear and then pick up the rest as the fashion changes.

2. Suits : So you are a T-shirt Jean girl well don't expect to jump into them in the first month of marriage! Suits are you savior here! and because you would be needing so many of them make sure you Save! Its economical to get fabrics and get them stitched instead of buying ready-made. (although if you know an economical ready-made suit shop, please leave a comment below with details :P)

Splurge on 2 good Anarkali's The days you are too tired to wear a saree or cant figure out the pleats, Anarkali come as a god sent gift. They look dressy and all you have to do is slip them on.

Western
For your wedding wardrobe buy only those that you will need during your honeymoon, the rest can be brought later easily as fashion and weather changes.

Buy a Lot of shorts, Tshirts, tops, tunics, jeans, skirts, dresses, a good mixture of 10 garments.

Pick up pieces from bigger retail shops like Shopper's Stop and Globus, M-block (GK in Delhi) road side guys also have some great pieces, you just need to find the right ones. Go to Export surplus places they generally have good stuff too, just dig deep. Think of it this way, its export surplus so it was anyways going to Zara and H&M's of the world.

So for all western wear Save! as much as you can.

Others

Bags, shoes, artificial earrings Save! Save! Save! Stick to the basics! Golds, silver, black, beigh; stick to colors that will go with atleast 3-4 of your outfits

Other Tips

1. It goes without saying to shop during SALE time!
2. If you know your wedding date before hand then go shopping during off-season, a lot of so-called sales during wedding seasons are actually just inflated rates with a discount tag on.
3. Know what you want to buy before hand and stick to it (this is probably the most difficult to do!)

So whether you Splurge or Save, enjoy Yourself!! After all your getting a Brand new Wardrobe!!

Have fun Trousseau shopping!
